HOUSE OF JOY
by Madhuri Shekar
directed by Saheem Ali
Thursday, August 10 | 3pm
Atlantic Stage 2, 330 West 16th St.
Set some time like the 17th century, in some place like Delhi, India, House of Joy tells the story of Hamida, an elite female bodyguard in the Emperor’s Imperial Harem. Faced with an impossible ethical quandary, Hamida tries to help an abused Queen escape the heavily guarded harem, thus risking her life and going against everything she was raised to believe. A swashbuckling action-adventure romance inspired by the legends of Indian history.
Tonight at 8pm at @theblanktheatre a staged reading of my new play QUEEN. Smart scientists try to save the bees without destroying their ethics or their friendship. I’m not great at summaries. But I’m excited to see the play up on its feet. 🐝🐝🐝🐝
New plays are focus of Globe fest
Freshly minted works of drama by both established playwrights and first-timers are the focus of the New Voices Festival, the Old Globe Theatre’s just-announced series of new-play readings.
The free fest, scheduled for Dec. 13-15, will spotlight works by three professionals: JC Lee (“Luce”), David West Read (“The Great Pretender”) and Madhuri Shekar (“A Nice Indian Boy”).
It also will showcase plays coming out of an initiative launched in 2012: The Old Globe Community Voices, which guides San Diegans through the creation of works for the stage
