Cal Shakes sets impressive 2019 season, featuring two of the Bard’s best
Could not be more excited to share the news that HOUSE OF JOY will be getting its world premiere production at Cal Shakes, in August 2019.
I wrote this play imagining a Shakespeare festival in mind – but it was a fanciful thought. I didn’t actually dream that it would come true exactly as I had imagined it.
But HOUSE OF JOY is epic and fanciful and repurposes legends of history to talk about what I’m most excited and terrified about today. It is big and fun and dark and has loads of stage combat. It was MADE for a Shakespeare festival and I am so thrilled that I’ll get to see it come to life in the Bay Area, where I was born, in a beautiful summer outdoor amphitheater. Grateful to Eric Ting and the artistic leadership at Cal Shakes. More updates to come.
QUEEN will be playing in the Bay Area this weekend, Sep 28-29! Tickets/info: https://www.tikkl.com/enacte/c/queen
Produced by EnActe Arts and directed by Vinita Sud Belani.
EnActe did multiple wonderful productions of my play A NICE INDIAN BOY and I’m so glad to be working with them again.
The Simpsons writer/producer and playwright Mike Reiss saw the Bay Area premiere of the play last week and was nice enough to leave a video review.
Which also made me think of another amazing video review I got for this play, from Tanya Saracho herself, playwright extraordinaire and creator of the new Starz show VIDA.
Beyond ‘culture in a silo’
A lovely article on Enacte Arts Inc. that’s producing the Bay Area premiere of ‘A Nice Indian Boy’ this weekend. So happy that this play is in the hands of a really wonderful group of artists. Tickets available here!
A bit delayed, but I got to go up to San Francisco to see Custom Made Theatre’s Bay Area premiere of ‘In Love and Warcraft’ during Thanksgiving weekend. Here’s a little bit of me answering a question during the Q&A – “Are you a gamer?”
The production has been extended through Dec 17 so one weekend left!
(via Theatre Eddys: “In Love and Warcraft”)
‘In Love and Warcraft’ is having its Bay Area Premiere at Custom Made Theatre Company in San Francisco, running till Dec 12. It’s been getting GREAT reviews!
Theatre Eddys: In Love and Warcraft as produced by Custom Made is a feel-good, light-hearted, but also not-your-everyday romantic comedy that deserves to be seen by Millennials and Boomers alike.
My Cultural Landscape: Custom Made has assembled a winning ensemble that, under James Nelson’s direction, makes the most of Shekar’s hilarious script.
VMediaBackstage: In this girl meets boy and girl awakening geek festival, director Nelson has mixed a nice human game reality with a very funny important and touching script from Shekar. “In Love and Warcraft” is fun, nerdy and by the end, darkly poignant. This is the perfect holiday treat on the eve of the new STAR WARS film, this will keep your geeky gamer pals all smiles til the force opens in December.
TheatreStorm: This raunchy, gentle, sweet spirited, informative, well-performed play is a winner.
I’ll be at Custom Made on Saturday, Nov 28 for a talkback after the show!
